California Sending Veteran Firefighters To Battle Australian Bushfires

When California was swept up in deadly fires, Australian firefighters crossed the ocean to lend a hand. Now, California firefighters are returning the favor by sending an elite crew of veteran firefighters to battle the bush fire crisis down under.

Hand-Picked and Battle-Tested

The California crew consists of 20 hand-picked, highly experienced veterans. Many of them fought the Station Fire and Saddle Ridge wildfires in California.

They’ll be joining more than 100 other firefighters from across the U.S. who are already there.

Australia’s bush fires have raged out of control since September. The fires have killed 23 people, wiped out hundreds of thousands of animals and destroyed more than 23,000 acres of land including koala and kangaroo habitats. They have also taken the lives of at least two firefighters.

It Goes Up Like a Torch

Jonathan Merager of the Angeles Forest Fire Service explained that Australia asked for firefighters with experience with large trees. Merager noted that eucalyptus trees are particularly deadly.

“The wind will carry embers at a significant distance,” he told CNN. “There’s a great amount of oils in the eucalyptus, and when it catches, it goes up like a torch.”

Proud of Our Heroes

The Angeles Forest Fire Service posted a picture of the crew getting ready for its 16-hour flight, saying, “We are proud of our heroes and wish them safe travels.”

‘Old Coots’ Give Free Advice Every Saturday At Local Market

January 5, 2020 by Good Living Guide. This post may contain affiliate links. 8 Comments

They say age brings wisdom, and a group of geezers in Salt Lake City have discovered that their wisdom is a hot commodity. Every weekend, these “old coots” dole out advice to the lost, lovelorn and confused.

Sitting Around and Talking

At Tony Caputo’s deli in Salt Lake City, there was always a group of people instantly recognizable at any restaurant, café or diner the world over. It’s a group of older people who offer running commentary on anyone and everything.

In this case, it was deli owner Tony Caputo who headed this group. The six men and one woman met every Saturday to drink coffee and talk about the world.

It Started as a Joke

One day, Caputo declared that they were so good at solving the world’s problems, they should start offering their advice to others. Caputo then announced he had set up a booth at a weekly farmer’s market.

Their banner read, “Old Coots Giving Advice.” A disclaimer underneath added, “It’s probably bad advice, but it’s free.”

Lining Up to Get a Listening Ear

Their booth started as a joke, but it quickly became the market’s star attraction. People line up weekly to get the old codgers’ advice on everything from landscaping to cars to marriage.

Caputo told the Washington Post, “We always listen carefully and don’t give gratuitous advice.”

Nobody Would Hire Man With Autism So He Opened His Own Coffee Shop

When Michael Coyne couldn’t find a job, he took an unusual route to solving the problem. He opened his own coffee shop.

At Red, White & Brew in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, customers find a warm, welcoming place for everyone. They also find a friendly owner who is successfully running his own business.

Years of Frustration

Michael has autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He is a former Special Olympics athlete who completed a hospitality training program. When he finished the program, he started looking for a restaurant job. Time after time, he said, he was told “no.”

After years of frustration, Coyne and his family came up with a new plan. He took business classes at the Rhode Island Developmental Disability Center. He then took out a business loan and opened Red, White & Brew.

Beacon of Hope

Coyne plans to hire people with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The coffee shop displays artwork and crafts created by local people with disabilities. The crafts are available at a store across the street.

Coyne said he knows what it’s like to be unappreciated, and he wants to make sure nobody else feels that way. As he told CBS News, he wants Red, White & Brew to be a “beacon of hope” for anyone who feels left out.

30-Year-Old Single Woman Adopts The Most Children On ‘Adoption Day’

November is National Adoption Month, and one single mother in Ohio decided to celebrate by quadrupling the size of her family. Math teacher Treka Engleman, who is 30, said she was ready to make her three foster children a permanent part of her life.

Adoption Day

Adoptions are normally private, but some counties hold public Adoption Days in hopes of encouraging other people to consider adoption.

Judge Ralph Winkler opened Engleman’s hearing by stating that she had “won the trophy for the most children.”

Winkler joked with the children as he explained that signing the paper was equivalent to saying, “Judge, I want Treka to be my forever mom.” All three children agreed, and with three strokes of his pen, the judge declared that Engleman was now the mother of 16-year-old Mercedes, 12-year-old Alexis and three-year-old Elijah Lee.

Friends and Family

In an interview with a local news channel, Engleman acknowledged the difficulty of taking on three children as a single mother, but noted that she has a large extended family, a supportive church and many friends.

During the hearing, Engleman and the children wore matching sweatshirts that read “Officially Team Engleman 2019.”

A Happy Ending

The Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services posted a video of Engleman’s courtroom hearing.

Alexis said having Treka as their mother was “a dream come true.”

Francesca Rausi is only four years old, but she already has a modeling career that any girl would envy. Her success is even more impressive because Rausi has Down syndrome.

A Unique Runway Show

While appearing in a recent fashion show, Rausi was clearly the star of the event.

She was walking in the Fashion Show Unici which was held in Passarella, Malta. Unici is Italian for “unique,” and the show featured models who are unique for having physical or developmental disabilities.

Rausi walked with 23-year-old Madeline Stuart, who is the world’s professional catwalk model with Down syndrome.

With her intensely expressive face and gray-blue eyes, it’s easy to see why Rausi captured the hearts and eyes of viewers everywhere. It’s also clear that she lights up the room everywhere she goes.

Watch: Hockey Fans Throw 45,000 Teddy Bears Onto Ice For Charity

Hockey fans in Pennsylvania stepped up to deliver a massive amount of cuteness to children in need.

Pelting the Ice With Pelts

Fans of the Hershey Bears pelted the ice rink with more than 45,000 stuffed bears, dogs, cats, turtles, penguins and more as part of an annual charity event.

One of the toys was an enormous sloth that had to be walked down the stadium steps by several people.

A Bear Bonanza

The Teddy Bear Toss is an annual, longstanding tradition among professional hockey teams. On a certain date, fans wait for their team to score its first goal. As soon as the team scores, fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice. The team later gives the toys to a local children’s charity.

It’s always a big event, but this year, the Hershey Bears’ fans went out of their way to deliver for the children. It took 40 minutes to clear all 45,650 toys out of the rink, and a team spokesman told a local paper that it was their biggest haul ever.

Christmas Cheer

In fact, the Bears’ haul could well be a record-setting number for all teams that held a Teddy Bear Toss.

Children at 40 different charities will get a little more joy this Christmas, thanks to some tough guys on the ice and their warmhearted fans.

Hilarious, Heartwarming Story About Grandma With Early Onset Dementia

December 28, 2019 by Good Living Guide. This post may contain affiliate links. Leave a Comment

Watching a loved one struggle with dementia is not an easy task, but one New York City storyteller found a way to discover joy and laughter in it. Robert Sherer told a funny story to a live audience about his elderly grandmother.

Sherer was a live-in caretaker for his grandmother while she was going through early onset dementia.

A Worried Grandmother

One day, when he came out of the bathroom, his grandmother handed him a piece of paper with a phone number on it. When he asked what it was, his grandmother told him she was “very, very worried” about him because he had to “go to the bathroom all the time.”

He ultimately learns that she was much sharper than he thought. We hope you enjoy the full story as told in the video below.

The story is featured on the storytelling blog The Moth.

When a Grand Rapids boy discovered he was going to be adopted by his foster parents, he knew the occasion required a special celebration. The five-year-old invited his entire kindergarten class to witness the official courtroom ceremony.

From Foster to Family Member

Michael’s parents, Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton, initially took him in as a foster a year ago. They quickly decided they wanted to make the arrangement permanent.

They have been married 10 years and have no other children.

When she learned about the impending adoption, Michael’s kindergarten teacher suggested they do it on Adoption Day at the Kent County courtroom. On the scheduled day, Michael’s classmates filed in holding paper cutouts of hearts. The courtroom reported that 37 families finalized their adoption paperwork on the same day.

Touching Moments

During Michael’s hearing, Judge Patricia Gardner asked the children to tell her what Michael meant to them. They all responded saying, “He’s my friend,” or “I love Michael.” Dave Eaton said that was the part that touched him the most.

Michael told a local news station he was thrilled. As his father embraced him, the boy said, “I love my daddy too much.”

102-Year-Old Releases First-Ever Music Album Called ‘Senior Song Book’

They have a combined age of 191, but these two musicians are just getting started.

Marvin Weisbord, an 89-year-old jazz musician, and his friend Alan Tripp, a lyricist who is 102, have just released their first music project. The album, Senior Song Book, has been a smash success.

Old Music With a New View

Weisbord and Tripp met at their Pennsylvania retirement community. They both love the early golden age of popular music, and their compositions are a musical throwback to the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

As Weisbord said in a video interview, “We combine that old music with a new point of view.”

That new point of view has led to lyrics like these:

I know I want to kiss you,
But, baby, there’s an issue.
I just can’t remember your name.

Senior Song Book Is Going Viral

The pair have been featured in major newspapers and on talk shows, and the album is now available on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon. They’ve received fan mail from all over the world and become overnight social media stars.

Weisbord told People magazine, “For the first time in my old time, I’m learning what ‘going viral’ means.”

Gary Sinise Takes Over 1,000 Children Of Fallen Soldiers To Disney World

December 21, 2019 by Good Living Guide. This post may contain affiliate links. 6 Comments

Actor Gary Sinise has long been known for his advocacy supporting veterans and first responders. Now, he’s gone an extra step to help out their kids by flying 1,000 of them to Disney World.

Sinise’s Snowball

In 2017, Sinise established the Snowball Express as a way to offer a five-day “healing retreat” during the holiday season to the children of fallen soldiers.

This charter left Los Angeles this morning with 91 kids, 176 in all, and I got to take these photos with them before they left. I’ll join up in a few days. Have fun kids! We love you! pic.twitter.com/jPRuZ0iuIp

— Gary Sinise (@GarySinise) December 7, 2019

In a partnership with American Airlines, Sinise’s foundation flies these children and their surviving parents to Disney World for a holiday getaway focused on having fun and healing.

Attendees also find that it’s a great way to meet other families going through the same struggles. All the attendees are Gold Star families who have lost a loved one to wartime conflict or military service.

Counseling and Resources

Having fun is the main part, but the Snowball Express doesn’t stop there.

Included in the retreat is a well-coordinated outreach effort that helps surviving parents navigate the benefits and counseling available to them. During their stay at Disney World, certain conference rooms are set aside to help families navigate the resources available through the military and the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Sinise said, “We just want these children to know that we do not forget what they’re going through.”
