The ancient Incas revered them as a gift from the earth goddess. Their trade in alpaca wool was the basis of their wealth. When the Spanish conquered the Incas in the 1500s, they killed most of the alpacas.

Today, alpacas are once again an important part of life in many South American countries.

Alpaca farming has grown in popularity over the past decade. There is a high demand in the fashion industry for alpaca wool, which is durable, luxurious and hypoallergenic.
