When a Grand Rapids boy discovered he was going to be adopted by his foster parents, he knew the occasion required a special celebration. The five-year-old invited his entire kindergarten class to witness the official courtroom ceremony.

From Foster to Family Member

Michael’s parents, Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton, initially took him in as a foster a year ago. They quickly decided they wanted to make the arrangement permanent.

They have been married 10 years and have no other children.

When she learned about the impending adoption, Michael’s kindergarten teacher suggested they do it on Adoption Day at the Kent County courtroom. On the scheduled day, Michael’s classmates filed in holding paper cutouts of hearts. The courtroom reported that 37 families finalized their adoption paperwork on the same day.

Touching Moments

During Michael’s hearing, Judge Patricia Gardner asked the children to tell her what Michael meant to them. They all responded saying, “He’s my friend,” or “I love Michael.” Dave Eaton said that was the part that touched him the most.

Michael told a local news station he was thrilled. As his father embraced him, the boy said, “I love my daddy too much.”
