The whole thing started when a police officer in Cashion, Oklahoma, pulled over 65-year-old Debra Hamil for a broken tail light.
A Wild Ride
Bodycam footage from the confrontation shows that Hamil asked the police officer to give her a warning and let her go. When he refused and continued writing the ticket, she became incensed and started cussing at him.
The police officer told her he was arresting her. In response, Hamil swore at him and drove off. This led to a crosstown police chase that finally ended with the police officer arresting Hamil in a parking lot.
Just a Country Girl
When she tried to kick him in the groin, he pulled out the Taser.
“I’m a country girl,” Hamil said in her defense. “I don’t like being thrown on the ground.”
New Charges
Hamil was taken to the hospital after she complained that the Taser hurt her. She emerged to discover that she was charged with felony assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
She should have just taken the ticket.
Do you think the cop was too tough on this cantankerous grandma, or did she get what she deserved?

Debbie Barton says
Do the crime, pay the fine or do the time!!! Well deserved tazing!
China says
I just would have cooperated with the orders
Terri says
I would have asked the cop, after I got the ticket, how he sleeps at night after writing tickets for something that had harmed no one, and then I would have fixed the tail light, gone to court and showed the Judge, where he would have dismissed it.
linda bell says
absolutely!!! i’ m 70 and also a country
girl but l would not pull her stupid tricks!!!
jim says
got exactly what she deserved
ROMA says
I agree if she was uncontrollable. but I think you probably just could have handcuffed her with the help of the other officers
Alan Hart says
ROMA You start with a premise that there were others around? It shouldn’t have anything to do with age..As an aside you should do a wall around your vehicle to be sure all is well before going out on the road.
Gail says
Agree!
Peg says
I would’ve put the cuffs in the front for a woman, especially being elderly .
Terah says
Let’s just say I turn 65 in May and I am a lot of things, but elderly doesn’t come to mind about me from anyone I know. And she was not acting elderly. If she was acting anything, it was juvenile. It sounds like she was pr@ it ally asking for everything she got!
Robert Drake says
F*** THAT THATS A SENIOR CITIZEN
NO WAY IN HELL WAS THAT SO CALLED MAN WAS TO DI THAT TO THAT LADY!
IF IT WAS HIS MOTHER OR A RELATIVE OF HIS HE SAMN SURE BE ON THE PERSON HEAD WHO DID THIS TO HIS MOM ! 💯 NEED TO HAVE MORE RESPECT FOR OUR ELDERS 💯
Diana says
SHE WAS NO LADY! She acted up, got what she deserved!
Deborah says
I will be 65 in a month. I would never do what she did. She deserved what she got. She was no frail elder.
Margie says
She acted like an azzhole. She got what she deserved.
Linda says
I believe he would have chewed out his mother for making an ass of herself. Really a poor roll model. And we wonder where these kids get the idea to act like an ass ~ ~ just watch grandma!!
Ashley says
White privilege right there! Officer totally did the right thing!! And of course the taser hurt, it’s supposed to!!! Just because you’re white doesn’t mean you’re above the law!
rheanell says
or old just because you’re older doesn’t mean you don’t have to comply…white black green or purple..it has nothing to do with race
Lne copoletta says
she said nothing about being WHITE!!!! on 65 year old woman. where did YOU, as a racist ,get that?
Pamela Donley says
Aren’t there bigger fish to fry?
Phyllis says
No kidding!
Betty says
Race is not the problem ,the lady deserves the ticket. I agree with you
Johnsmith says
Why play the race card. She was just a plain stupid woman!
Eric says
Sad, some People have to put Race in Everything!!!
Donna says
This has nothing to do with the color of her skin, she broke the law, and resisted arrest. Makes no difference the color of her skin. Why bring race into this?
ROMA says
Why bring race into this . That comment was so unnecessary.
Rhonda Crowe-Higgins says
has nothing to do wth race,
Janet Bacon says
I think the has dementia.
Terah says
If you don’t mind me saying so,I really doubt that her skin color was crossing her mind as she was acting like a child. As for privilege, it sounds like she got exactly what she was asking for. Believe it or not, by the time you are 65, you are pretty accustomed to be being whatever color you are and thinking,”hey, I’m white again today” isn’t always the first go to for every little incident.
Sheila says
She should have taken the ticket. She made a mountain out of s molehill.
Melissa says
This is horrible! She said she would sing it after but he had to throw his weight around with a old lady and when she just wanted to stand he had to force her down. Police officers with big egos give cops a bad reputation!
Diane says
Poor innocent old lady who was just minding her own business….my ass. Why should the cop just stand there and take it? She was the one who decided that it was going to play out the way it did.
Eric says
If She would have been Nice, He might have given Her a warning!
linda bell says
Try walking ONE day in the boots of a cop
and you’ll change your tune!!!!
Debra says
She was absolutely too big for her britches” she was un-co-operative. Acting like a spoiled five year old…. needing a time out‼️
Alice Rawlins says
She acted up the police did his job he was absolutely right Dont dog him out he followed protecal.
Linda says
The officer’s actions show that he lacks wisdom and people skills. Given the situation a written warning would have be sufficient and appropriate. I can’t help but believe many of the people commenting here are 20+ years younger than this woman. I have great concern that most young people in our country no longer have respect for elders and in many cases have actual animosity towards them. Ya’ll want to think about this “old” axiom, ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’.
Diana says
I’m 65 and I TOTALLY disagree with you! Things wouldn’t have gotten out of hand if she complied.
Jim says
You are so full of it.,”throwing his weight around”. She challenged him, and lost. Don’t challenge the police.
Deb says
I watched this arrest on Live PD. Yes she deserved it. The officer told her to get out of her vehicle and she said NO! She didnt have any paperwork, she drove off then when she stopped she was yelling as the cop pulled her out. She should’ve took the ticket.
ROMA says
I AGREE.
Karen says
She should have accepted the ticket….have the taillight fixed…go to court and it probably would have been dismissed. Some people are just born arguers.
Debra says
Agree‼️
Deborah Hopkins says
Yes she Absolutely got what she deserved! How disrespectful and she is the one using violence! UNBELIEVABLE!
MJH says
She deserved every bit of what he gave her and more. This idea that I don’t have to do what you say is getting old. I’d throw the book at her and make her do time, lots of time for assaulting an officer and for taking off! Stupid, stupid country girl.
Debra says
👍Agree‼️
Ellen Wilson Gunstone says
I think the police have a very difficult job to do. But the police should not act like they have control over everything and everybody. If this police officer showed respect and concern for this grandmother instead of the automatic do as I command attitude, he or she would have been able to handle the situation much more pleasantly. Maybe being on a fixed income, she couldn’t afford to fix the tail light. The police are supposed to HELP us, not instigate or agitate us. If the officer perhaps showed grandma some respect just for her age alone, he or she could have gotten to the real problem of why the tail light was broken to begin with. Maybe the officer could have suggested someone to fix it for her at a reasonable cost. Maybe if the officer took a look at the light, maybe a wire just needed to be plugged back in. I think the officer should have done a more thorough invesiigative analysis before judging, condemning, and handing out a punishment, especially to someone 2 or 3 times his or her age.
rheanell says
or old just because you’re older doesn’t mean you don’t have to comply…white black green or purple..it has nothing to do with race
rheanell says
no it’s simple. obey the officer… you don’t drive a car without it being roadworthy especially when she had 6 months to correct it..she didn’t..instead, she was a smart butt, rude, disrespectful, then told the officer what he wasn’t going to do..don’t make excuses for her. the world is full of people and their excuses..I’m her age and I have never told an officer no.been tased or arrested,,..for fear of ending up just as she did…Good job officer..he warned and warned her!
Sandy sue says
Yes give a warning to her. They do this but what about all the druggies out there. This country needs more officers to go after them instead of a broken tail light. The time he spent on her could have found drug related people.h
Patrick A VanVoorhis says
Now that’s what I’m talking about. Cops these days have 0 compassion.
JTM says
I agree. In general retirees today on a fixed income can barely afford to pay for their electricity much less auto repairs assuming this lady knew she had a broken tail light. Furthermore the elderly by the most have health issues some which reflect on poor mental cognitive processing of problems and situations. Anyone who has been a caregiver to the elderly knows this. I think the narrative should of gone differently with a little psychological maneuvering and empathy on the officers part. If I was the traffic court judge I would send her for a psych evaluation and the officer to sensitivity training.
Diana says
OHHHH GIVE ME A BREAK! You are so wrong on every aspect!
Cathrine Brown says
No, she was arrogant, aggressive and thought her age would get her off, when it didn’t work her way she threw a massive tantrum. Perhaps that works in other parts of her life. I thank the police officer for doing a great job getting another dangerous driver accountable for bad driving.
Tammy says
I appreciate your response. She totally deserved it. She escalated the whole thing. We pay our law enforcement to enforce the law. In order for society to operate peacefully and safely, we must respect those who are in authority and work within the systems our society has created. She’s a 65 year old spoiled brat!
Patrick A VanVoorhis says
And he wasn’t?
Cathrine Brown says
She was breaking the law. There are no exceptions for letting people off for age. Just imagine the chaos that would cause.
Tonia says
I watched this arrest. He gave her several commands numerous times. She drove away. He chased. I have had family in law enforcement….I’d you really want to tick one off, ‘ale them chase you. He got her out of vehicle to arrest for fleeing. She assaulted him. She deserved everything she got. This showing only part and then asking who is a fault is BS. In addition, the taillight in question that started this whole week episode was a
Mess and she told him it had been that way for 6 months.
Rhoda says
I am 65 and I would NEVER talk to an officer this way. She got what she deserved.
Lynn Shannon says
Yes she got what she deserved. Should’ve took the ticket and fixed the freaking taillight.
Systems Analyst says
California, in their arrogance, “let the cat out of the bag”, Police are not permitted to stop anyone for anything less than a criminal act. Motor Vehicle Codes are never criminal! Also, administrative Warrants are not criminal either. Such CIVIL warrants can only be used as “do not detain” notices! Doing otherwise is using “police powers” to extort money for civil, commercial, codes! Most states have a prohibition against “Peonage”, aka Debt Servitude. Look up the definition of police powers in your state and look where it clearly states ” . . for CRIMINAL . .” excluding any and all civil matters. Also look up “Quasi-***” and learn that “Quasi-judicial” is a synonym for”Fraud, Deception, Not Real . . .
Motor Vehicle Codes ARE “Quasi-Criminal” and require your CONSENT in order to allow them to proceed against you in a “Quasi-criminal” proceeding, aka Administrative Forum! “If you don’t know the words you can’t ask the questions. If you can’t ask the questions you wilnever find the answers!”
Patrick A VanVoorhis says
Amen !!!
Elizabeth Andrews says
Yes, she deserved to be arrested. But tazing was unnecessary — the officer could have overpowered her without resorting to a tactic that has killed numerous people.
None says
Well really the cop shouldn have tase the old lady should have done something diffrent way about take her. In cause he could have broke her bones
..
None says
When a police officer, highway patrol officer or sheriff orders you to do something, you must obey them. That’s the law. That’s how they keep the peace and citizens safe. The woman argued, disobeyed, assaulted and disrespected the officer. She had many chances to peacefully interact with the officer, instead she was belligerent and nasty. She deserved to e tased. The officer followed procedure.
Mary Q Public says
not true! there are lawful and unlawful orders. There was NO reason for him to order her out of the car! What was she being arrested for at that point? Because she refused to sign the ticket? She cannot be FORCED to sign the ticket. He never did say why she was being ordered out of the car. He is required to say! I would have feared for my life at that point!
Patrick A VanVoorhis says
Agreed , he escalated the situation instead of defusing.
A.T. says
You stupid ass woman WTF were you thinking? You got exactly what you deserved. Law Enforcement Officers wear a badge for a reason and whether you want to or not, you follow orders just like everyone else
Or You Go To Jail!
Thank you officers for the job you do every day to try and make our cities safer!
Joan says
She was going to get a zero point ticket by her actions she committed a federal offences. The officer acted correctly. How race got involved blows my mind. She broke the law.
Barbara Cammarato says
I watched this episode on TV. She was unbelievably rude and didn’t comply with his directions to get out of the car. Then leaving the scene where he had to chase her down. She still didn’t comply when he stopped her again. She refused to get out of the car. He warned her she would be tased. She got exact what she deserved for thinking she could get away with not following the law. That tail light hadn’t been fixed in 6 months. She was just a cantankerous woman who thought the law didn’t apply to her
Elisabeth Earhart says
Why take advantage of the cop because of her age? So many people give excuses why they shouldn’t be charged for the crime they committed. Men are usually bad at this and their mama’s tell them they shouldn’t pay for raping etc. Because of some reason or another. Both should pay and learn respect for the law. White or black or whatever color you are.
Laura says
Listen again. He mentioned it had been broken for Six Months. She is not driving a broken down car. As has been said she should have taken the ticket and gotten it fixed. None of this would have happened and the ticket probably would have been dismissed. The law is the law. Officers have to enforce the law or where would we be?? And are they supposed to take a chance that they could be hurt because someone wants to not get a ticket? The next grandma could have a gun. The officer never knows. They are not mind readers
MG says
It went against her the moment she started cussing at him. And then to drive off away from a police officer against orders? What did she think was going to happen? And this is the role model that we want our kids to emulate? I I think not!
John Nies says
She got what she deserved. She showed no respect for the law. If she didn’t like the $80 fine, show up in court and take it up with the judge. If she would have acted like that in court, she would end up in jail anyway.
Cheryl says
Well …….I was tazed in 2017 and I thought I was doing the right thing by calling the police…..I’m now 59 and I’ve been disabled since 2000 ……In need oh help getting some things from a friend’s house ( so I thought she was a friend ) this girl a year older than myself, went totally off her rocker on a Sunday afternoon would not let me in the house where I was staying a few nights. When I showed up at her house, the door was locked , mind you I had spoke with her about an hour earlier,. She started screaming profanity at me through a glass front door ??????? Would not let me in , so I go to the back of the house where her son stays , in a she’d like , homemade building , no running water or toliet facilities etc. Just a room….he’s not allowed to stay in the house its self, only to eat a meal here and there, and maybe to use the bathroom to take a dump, let’s say, but yet she has at that time about 8 or 9 dogs inside the house , but there is a doggie door, and she does not abuse her dogs at all….I will give her that only credit….but back to what I’m saying i went in through the back door, to get some things I had in the dryer, knowing I am not staying there with someone like she was anyway , yelling , screaming , ???? Crazy eyes and acting , anyway , she was trying to provoke me by getting in my face wanting me to hit her or something stupid. At this time I told her, and her son , mid 30s,drawing disability, also , and her boyfriend, whom the house belongs to him , since him mother passed years ago prior, I told her in front of these 2 witnesses that I would not go to where she was trying to take this situation….I was going to leave and I would be back with the police to gather the things that I did have there…….buy the time I get from her place to some true friends for dinner, she had called the cops prior to me calling them like I had said I was going to do , but I had no ideal that she had called them before I did, with ???? A bizarre story , this is what I was told right as I was tazed , it took a good 2 or more hours to get to my call, that I was under arrest for hitting this girl, and her disabled son, which was a shock to me since I never touched her or her son, but this is being told to me as I looked at my friend whom was videoing the whole thing……I wasn’t even close to the officer, much less a threat to him, I was clueless really on what had just happened …..I really to this day di not know what she possibly had told the officer to make him think I was such a threat to him. But I was tazed 2 times with 4 leads in me ( which I was far enough away from him that I swear I saw something coming out of the corner of my eye at me, it was something alright , az I flipped around on the ground like a fish out of water….actually still unaware of what was really happening , with him man handling me yanking me around putting hand cuffs on me. I just know this all started on a mid afternoon sunny hot day, that turned into my worst nightmare I was looked at by the local EMS told to get in the car handcuffed with this officer whom I was sure at that point was trying to kill me….I was taken to a hospital 30 miles away, because they couldn’t find one of the leads, when I arrived at the hospital, I was laughed at , staff joking around, so unprofessional, and taking their sweet time , I guess being in hand cuffs, ?????, Anyway out local cheif if police showed the nurse while he was flirting with her , how to pull the leed out of me…..then I was brought back to the jail where iwas booked with 2 felonies and several mistamenors and finally told what I had done ….and tried to convince me that’s what happened. …. Folks I remember everything like it was yesterday….. I was in jail 3 days before the judge came to see me to set bail….my whole life changed….. Before this happened , I had never had a ticket , was not looked at the way I was after all of that happened ever again. It ruined my life ……the people who I thought knew me, I had moved back with my girls a year after my father died , 1n 1997, I didn’t even keep up with who the police were, never needed to….and I had to pay my bond off …my kids 8r grandkids still don’t have much to do with me all because of some vicious person that said I had beat her and her son up without even giving me a chance to say anything and from that point I never trusted an officer in that town anyway but since was pretty much on my on without much help from the ones I thought knew me the most..and since then have moved , and not actually of my own free will but to survive what happened after that day set my whole life into a down spun with people there ……you spend your who life making a respectful name for yourself and it takes one person 3 minutes to ruin you. That God for the friend who took the video, trying to tell the officer when tazing me I was disabled, anyway I hurt more now than before especially my body ….I have numerous health issues, and have more now thanks to a 25 year old policeman that was very tazer happy….. And yes I have an Attorney and filing a civil suit . A small town girl somewhere in the Texas panhandle region .
Cheryl says
I made some typegraphil errors I noticed
you dont know me says
And you just made some more typographical errors and many many other kinds of errors. I hope you’re suing the ever lovin’ daylights out of everybody involved, especially the cops, and get the hell out of Oklahoma. Oh, and thank you for reminding me to never come back there again. Amazingly bad what happened to you. Godspeed on getting your head back together.
Julio Ramirez says
1ST OF ALL. YOU DON’T HAVE TO SIGN THE TICKETS. AT THAT POINT, COP SHOULD HAVE HANDED HER THE TICKETS. YOU STILL HAVE YOUR COURT DATE TO APPEAR, TO PLEAD GUILTY/NOT GUILTY. 2ND, THE SITUATION REALLY ESCALATED WHEN SHE REFUSED TO SIGN, TOLD HER TO GET OUT, & THAT SHE WAS UNDER ARREST. UNDER ARREST FOR WHAT ??? REFUSING TO SIGN TICKETS ???? I THINK THE COPS EGO, ARROGANCE, & LOSS CONTROL OF SITUATION, IT SHOULD HAVE ENDED WHEN SHE REFUSED TO SIGN. GRANTED SHE SHOULDN’T HAVE DROVE OFF, AND KICKED AT COP. IN MY OPINION
Cammie says
She deserved it and more fines she should of just compiled she was breaking the law and continued to break the law, she is not elderly they operate in wisdom she acted like a child who needs a spanking of taze to calm her down therefore she asked for it.
R.Copeland requa says
She should have done as requested. If she had none of this would have happened. Grow up grandmother!
